Yield SignIf I were to ask you the color of a traffic Yield sign, in the United States, you, like most people that I’ve asked, might say YELLOW. In fact, if I told you that you were wrong, you would probably argue with me. I know because I did, as did others I chatted with. The reality is that they started out being Yellow in 1954 and remained that way for almost 20 years. In 1971, however, they were changed to a Red border with a White inside  (https://www.catalogs.com/info/travel-vacations/what-does-a-yield-sign-mean.html).   This is an example of my reality that needed adjusting. I have been driving for 47 years since the signs officially changed in the US, but until my internal reality and awareness shifted I couldn’t see what was right in front of me.

Another example: I have used my laptop as my only computer for as long as I can remember.  Even though I have been prompted many times, I resisted the switch to a desktop because I had my laptop. Why would I need a desktop or a second monitor?  Now, flash forward after using my widescreen monitor and a desktop at work, I can’t understand how I ever got work done on my laptop with only a single screen and a trackpad.

These are two of my strongly held beliefs that turned out to need adjustment.  I am now looking at other areas of my life to find where my perceptions or beliefs can be altered. I am examining the tools I already have and asking how can I be more effective?  At work, for instance, take voice recognition software. Can it help me to be more efficient, allowing me to better balance work and life?

With the help of my good friend and coach, Alex Aanderud, taking a different view of work and life is already helping me to get more work done in less time, and I can use this new-found time to focus on the real priorities in life.  I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
